Statement of Mayor Francis Slay:
I am proud to be here with all of you – and with the Post-Dispatch Citizens of the Year.
Frankie Muse Freeman is an exemplary citizen of St. Louis – and has been for most of her nine decades.
We have heard a lot about her life today, about her unwavering spirit and strong convictions. We all know how she’s changed the landscape of civil rights and public education in St. Louis – and beyond.
I’m confident in saying that Frankie Muse Freeman has seen more and accomplished more than any three of us in the room.
Frankie continues to work for things that too many people believe to be impossible.
As Mayor of the City of St. Louis, there are a few distinctions I can bestow on distinguished people.
I can deliver a proclamation and designate a Day of Honor for Frankie Freeman - which I have in the past.
I can bring the City’s best wishes and gratitude to Frankie Freeman – and I do so tonight.
And, I can do one more thing, which I have done only sparing during my tenure.
For her tireless crusade for equal rights and better opportunities for all - and as a fitting symbol of the innumerable doors she has unlocked for so many people - I am honored to present Frankie Muse Freeman with the Key to the City of St. Louis.
Thank you for a lifetime of incredible work and accomplishments.
