Mini Poll: Do It Yourself
Most serious (OK, not so serious) commentators blame France for the current state of service in America. For centuries, French shoppers have happily bagged their own groceries – while, for at least some of that time, Americans exercised their Constitutional right to have checkers and baggers ease their exits from Le Super Market.
Gas stations broke the paradigm here in the early 1970s, as oil companies transformed service stations into “self-service” stations – and rapidly yielded the services of filling, wiping, and inflating to customers. From there, self-service spread to banking (ATMs) and restaurants (bus your own table).
A survey of the many companies offering self-service hardware, software, and advice on the Internet suggests that we have not seen the end of self-service’s reach into our lives.
This poll examines your appetite for doing more things without the intervention of other humans.
