Mini Poll: Domestic Violence, VAWA

The nature and extent of domestic violence are debated subjects; its existence is not. Police officers, counselors, physicians, advocates, and prosecutors can all testify that it is a significant public safety, public health, and human rights issue.
Two recent events in the news inspired this week’s Mini-Poll on the subject on domestic violence. First, the landmark Violence Against Women Act of 1994 is up for reauthorization this month -- and the subject is being hotly debated in the United States Senate, particularly regarding provisions that would expand its protections to include members of the immigrant, LGBT, and Native American communities. Second, a candidate for the Republican nomination to represent Missouri in the Senate was seemingly stumped this week by a voter’s question about her position on VAWA. According to the Springfield News-Leader, the candidate said that she didn’t have a position on the VAWA, and was “not sure” what the law was about. That “oops moment” drew the quick attention of political writers, partisans, opponents – and a speedy clarification from her campaign communications staff that the would-be Senator, in fact, supports a version of the bill.
