Welcome Center May Get New Use
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, September 12, 2005
Gov. Matt Blunt has informed St. Louis City and county officials that the Welcome Center at Lambert Airport will not be needed as a screening and transitional station for evacuees from the Gulf Coast. Federal emergency management officials have suspended flight operations. It is unlikely that the Welcome Center here will be used.
St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said that he was grateful to the hundreds of individual and corporate volunteers who worked so hard to prepare the Welcome Center so quickly. The Mayor said that the protocols and relationships established among City, county, state, corporate, and private philanthropic agencies would be useful in any future emergency situation.
City officials are currently evaluating the Welcome Center facility to see if it could work as a drop-in social services center for hundreds of former Gulf Coast residents who have made their own ways to the St. Louis region.
