Front Yard Vegetable Gardens
The publisher of "The Gateway Gardener" asked me whether "there are any ordinances in the City that would restrict or make conditional planting/growing a vegetable garden in the front yard?"
That's a good question.
Catherine Werner, the City's sustainability director, did some research. Here is her response:
"There are no City ordinances that specifically govern having vegetable gardens in one's front yard. As long as they are well-tended (not unsightly), do not pose a safety concern (such as so tall they restrict vehicle view), or a drainage issue, vegetables can be grown in the front yard in the City of St. Louis. Assessments as to whether these conditions are being met will be made on a case by case basis."
