The Mayor's Blog
I Am Proud to Stand with President Obama Today
With a simple sentence, President Obama brought the United States closer to a day in which couples who are in loving, committed relationships are not blocked by law from civil marriage. He said, “Same sex couples should be able to get married.”
I agree. Here is what I wrote in January:
This week, I also joined the mayors of nearly 100 US cities in a proactive campaign in support of the freedom of gay and lesbian couples to marry and to enjoy the full rights of married couples. This is not only a matter of fairness (though it is certainly that). Cities are strengthened by their families. I want St. Louis to be the sort of diverse and open place in which all families, gay and straight, choose to live, create, and build businesses.
Not everyone is going to agree with what we are saying, but many more will disagree with what they think they are hearing. Be clear. Both the President and I are talking about civil marriages and civil laws. Churches and other institutions of faith ought to be able to decide what their sacraments are, and what they recognize.
I am proud to stand with President Obama on a principle so important to many St. Louisans.
